Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about using the site and how the data is handled.
What is Supplement DB?
Supplement DB is an open database that organizes information on supplement ingredients, amounts, dosage forms, patents and trademarks from public data sources so you can look them up side by side. Use it to compare products or check ingredients before you buy. It does not guarantee that any product has a particular effect.
Where does the data come from?
Product and ingredient information comes mainly from the Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD) published by the US National Institutes of Health. Ingredient identification and classification use PubChem and the FDA UNII system, and patent information comes from public sources such as J-PlatPat (Japan Platform for Patent Information). See the Data Sources & Citation Policy page for details.
What is an ingredient breakdown by UNII?
The UNII (Unique Ingredient Identifier) is a unique code for substances maintained by the US FDA. Because an ingredient with the same name can come in different salt forms or derivatives, this site organizes ingredients by UNII and summarizes how the forms differ.
How are the product lists in Browse by Goal created?
They are generated automatically from ingredient data: each list contains products with ingredients that are commonly researched in connection with a goal such as sleep, beauty or general wellness. The lists do not guarantee any effect. Check the product label before choosing a product.
Can I buy the products listed here?
This site does not sell products directly. Some products include links to online stores such as iHerb, and we may earn a commission through affiliate programs. Purchases and contracts are made with the store you are sent to.
Is the information on this site medical advice?
No. The information here is provided for general reference and is not a substitute for diagnosis, treatment or advice from a physician or pharmacist. If you are being treated for a medical condition, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to a healthcare professional before taking supplements.
What patent and trademark information is available?
Patent information is organized by type (substance, use, formulation and process patents), rights holder, and filing and registration dates. The patent pages currently show sample data while the real data is being prepared, and trademark information is also in progress. The Glossary explains the terms used.
How often is the information updated?
The database is re-imported periodically as the public source data is updated. For the most current information, check each product's label and the original data sources.
